What a beautiful day! I woke up nice and early and drove to visit the Martin Luther King Jr National Historic Site. I’ve never been and have always wanted to go so I made a point to dedicate my day to visiting. And I’m so glad I did. The place was gorgeous and I learned so much.

I’d have to say some of the most touching parts of the museum was when you got to actually view some of his personal items, such as his favorite cologne, his cuff links and the robe he wore as a Preacher. It may sound crazy but to me it made him seem more real than ever. He was a flesh and bone human being; before this point he seemed to be larger than life. But those small little items really showed me that he was ultimately human just like the rest of us. And for a moment I felt like I connected with his soul, his deep passion for human rights and equality. My eyes welled up as I viewed photographs of the birth of his first child to his wife holding their little girl at his funeral. I thoroughly enjoyed reading Coretta’s letter about the Vietnam War she gave at Madison Square Garden and how she disagreed with it. Standing in front of Ebenezer Baptist Church seemed surreal. There was a little yellow butterfly that swarmed around for a few minutes before he jetted off towards a flower.
I’m so glad I FINALLY visited and would recommend this as a #1 destination if you’re ever in Atlanta. This is our history and we should be proud of this man, he fought for freedom, equality and rights for EVERYONE. We owe him so much. He fulfilled his destiny and made the World a better place to live.
An old sign for the site…notice the bullet holes at the bottom of the sign.
Martin Luther’s birthplace and childhood home
A fitting departure…
